Two of my brothers had enlisted. One-one proceeded me and had gone to Vietnam. And that, that was a very difficult thing because I watched my mother for a year. And watched what she went through and I felt very guilty about putting her through that a second time.
When I got to Vietnam, I wrote her and said 'I got very lucky. I'm in a hospital in Lang BienLong Binh is a ward in District 9 of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. During the Vietnam War, Long Binh was located outside of the city (then called Saigon) and the site of a U.S. Army base.

She gave me a big hug and a kiss and looked me in the eye and said, 'Don't you ever lie to me again.' It's a big lesson there. Don't ever lie to your mother. Ever. They know, they know. I kept it up the whole time. And for, for no good reason. For no good result. 'Things were things were pretty good today' or 'We had kind of a rough day, there was a couple accidents, or...' She, she saw through every word of it.
