I had been home several months and, and I knew I wasn't right, you know, I was really drinking a lot. And very isolated, extremely isolated. I got back in March and didn't see anybody until June or July, you know, I just was isolated. And which was not uncommon, and I went into an American Legion because I knew I was, had to do something, talk, just somehow connect with anybody. And Down on West Third Street in Davenport, and I walked in and they said, 'What the hell are you doing here, you hippie?' Cause I had a beard and long hair, you know, it's a good way to hide, and I said, 'I just came in for a glass of beer,' you know. 'This is a veterans, this is a veterans, this is a place of honor for veterans only, get your ass out of here.' And I said, 'How in the fuck do you suppose I got shrapnel, in a fucking cornfield around here somewhere?' 'No, get your ass out of here, we don't need your kind in here.' I said, 'No problem there, pops.' But World War II Vets really, were not real pleasant. They were assholes, most of them, and I remember, always kept that in mind, when, you know, I mean, Vietnam was never a war, and you know the guys from Korea ran into the same thing? I had no idea until I started talking with some Korean guys, but same exact thing.
