Mathias Duerst, "Diary of One of the Original Colonists of New Glarus, 1845." Translated from the German by John Luchsinger. Thwaites, Reuben Gold, editors. Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Vol. XV. Madison: Democrat Printing Company, State Printer. 1900. Frederick Hale, The Swiss in Wisconsin. Madison: State Historical Society of Wisconsin, 1994.

Steven D. Hoelscher, Heritage of Stage: the Invention of Ethnic Place in America's Little Switzerland. Madison: University of Wisconsin Press, 1998.
This fascinating and well-written book examines how the community of New Glarus has kept its Swiss heritage alive through language, music, festivals and drama. It also looks at the ways the people of New Glarus have made that Swiss culture their own—from early Kilbi festivals to the Swiss-American pageants of the late 19th-century; from the well-known Wilhem Tell plays to the heritage tourism efforts of the 20th century.

John Luchsinger, "The Planting of the Swiss Colony at New Glarus, Wis." Thwaites, Reuben Gold, editors. Collections of the State Historical Society of Wisconsin. Vol. XII. Madison: Democrat Printing Company, State Printer, 1892.
Born in the Canton of Glarus, Switzerland, in 1839, John Luchsinger emigrated to American at the age of six and settled with his parents, in New Glarus in 1856. This article recounts the establishment of the "Swiss Colony" at New Glarus, the difficult early years and the village's subsequent growth.
