While there has been no thorough study of Wisconsin high school girls'
basketball, the following books shed light on various parts of the story.

Press: A Century of Iowa Girls' Basketball. Ames, IA: State University
Press, 1993. Describes the experiences in neighboring Iowa, where the
competitive model for girls' basketball.
Joan S. Hult and Marianna Trekell, editors. A
Century of Women's Basketball: From Frailty to the Final Four.
Reston, VA: American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance, 1991. This volume contains several articles on early debates
over basketball's competitiveness and threats to girls' health.
Joanne Lannin. A History of Basketball for Girls
and Women: From Bloomers to Big Leagues. Minneapolis: Lerner
Sports, Lerner Publishing, 2000. Written for children, this engaging
and well-illustrated book traces the development of women's basketball
from its beginnings at Smith College to today's Women's National Basketball
Association.
Matt Otte. More Than a Game: The First 100 years
of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association, 1986 to 1996.
Amherst, WI: Palmer Publications, 1997. Includes a chapter on the WIAA's
decision to assume jurisdiction over girls' basketball following the
unsanctioned 1925 tournament in Chippewa Falls.

This organization seeks innovative legal, educational and political

primary clearinghouse for Wisconsin anti-mascot activities and includes
position papers, a chronology of the issue since 1989 and proposed legislation.

University of Wisconsin Athletic Board. Report
to the Faculty on the Study of Intercollegiate Boxing at the University
of Wisconsin. UW Wisconsin: Madison, 1950. This report, available
at several University of Wisconsin libraries, documents the response
to faculty health and safety concerns a decade before the boxing program
was ended. For dedicated researchers, the University
Archives maintains a large collection of original materials related
to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including photographs, films
and oral histories related to the boxing program. Materials are available
by appointment only.
