The tobacco companies promoted their products with advertising cards during the late 19th century. Used to stiffen the box, the cards became a powerful advertising method by printing the brand name of the cigarettes and a picture that was part of a larger series. The cards covered many subjects, but certainly sports figures were well represented. Practically every sport was covered during the period of cigarette advertising cards, 1870s-1890s. These cards were meant to be collected and were attractively printed as photographs as well as chromolithographs. Chromolithography was a printing process that used a separate limestone plate for each color. View the first card>> |
