When the State Historical Society of Wisconsin building was planned
at the end of the 19th century, a nationwide competition was held to
find an appropriate design. The winner was the Milwaukee architectural
firm of Ferry and Clas. Completed in 1900 at a cost of 1 million, the
new State Historical Society was the most expensive structure built
by the state up to that date.
Francis W. Grant supervised the building's construction. He also donated
the small album of photographs that provide most of the known visual
documentation of the construction.
