A striking feature of modern life is the extent to which people shape all
landscapes. Even scenic areas that we accept as pristine and unchanged look
the way they do as a consequence of human intervention. When a natural landscape
becomes a tourist attraction, it is inevitably modified to accommodate those
visitors.
The tension between offering a complete immersion in the natural world and
providing a safe and marketable experience is seen in the way that people
have shaped the natural features of the Dells. The introduction of built elements
into the natural world reveals much about the expectations of those who visit
it.
