Putting the "Wild" in Wilderness

Tourist attractions are responsible for a large part of the Dells' commercial success. Entrepreneurs directly exploited the natural beauty of the area by providing ready-made, packaged adventures such as boat trips. Others built attractions based upon features such as the Wisconsin River or Native American culture that extended the natural and cultural lore of the region.

The most flamboyant attractions drew from a broad range of folklore, mythology, pop culture and pure fantasy. These imaginary landscapes manipulated the size, scale and context of objects to create an otherworldly escape from daily life. These attractions were deeply rooted in the cultural preoccupations of their time. As a result, changes in trends, fads or cultural values made many attractions obsolete over time. Frequent visitors to the Dells recognize rapid change as an essential aspect of the tourist landscape.
