Ports of Call

Wisconsin has a rich maritime history that starts in the days of building wooden ships. Women in Sturgeon Bay helped to weld these giant iron steamers together during World War II. Lake transportation meant that grain, ore and lumber could be railed to Lake Superior and travel by ship to the Eastern states. Maritime historian Pat Labadie tells of the changes in ships, methods and materials moved by the mammoth vessels that travel the Great Lakes. For all their benefits, the Great Lakes could be extremely dangerous, as evidenced by visits to shipwrecks on Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. The launch of the Milwaukee Schooner gives hope that Wisconsin's maritime history will be passed along to future generations.
