Madeline Island
Islanders must adjust to seasonal changes in the mode of transportation
from the island to the mainland. The ferry operates from March through
mid-January. Ferries are ice bound at the island dock from January to
March. Winter crossings are made by wind-sled (air propeller-driven boat),
snowmobiles, on foot or by car, depending on ice conditions.
