About three miles offshore from the city of Bayfield in Northern Wisconsin's Apostle Islands. Bayfield is 20 miles from Ashland; from Duluth-Superior, 85 miles; from Milwaukee and Dubuque, 360 miles; from Madison, 315 miles; from Minneapolis-St. Paul, 220 miles. The island is accessible by ferry (operated by Madeline Island Ferry).
