Between the Civil War and the Great Depression, Wisconsin became a center of heavy industrial manufacturing. The industries included everything from ships and earth movers to generators and paper making machines. Wisconsin's highly skilled workers—laborers, engineers, machinists, welders, pattern makers— built the big machines that propelled the American economy.
